Disaster Preparation
Last updated July 08, 2006
This site is hosted by the U.S. government's Federal Emergency Management Agency, designed just for kids. There are games, activities, information, and printouts designed to teach children about the reality of disasters such as fires, earthquakes, and floods in a non-threatening way. The content is geared mostly for school-age children, though some content may be appropriate for preschoolers.

There is also a link for parent and teacher resources such as emergency planning for schools and disaster-preparedness lesson plans.

Just about every government agency has a kids' site. Yes, even the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobaco, and Firearms. Most of them are drivel that make me curse at how my tax money is being squandered. I probably wouldn't even consider including more than 2% of them on kideas.com. FEMA's, however, isn't half bad. Some of these subjects may seem difficult to discuss with children, but however scarey it is to talk about, it would be far more scarey for a child to experience a disaster without being emotionally or physically prepared. And hey, most of us adults could use a little refresher too. Maybe by discussing these issues with our children, we'll be motivated to step up our own disaster preparation as well.
